Forgiftninger

46-year-old Maria Jesus Fernandez Calvo was celebrating her husband’s birthday Feb. 16, 2019, at the Michelin-starred RiFF restaurant in Valencia, Spain, after eating a dish of rice and Morchella mushrooms. The family chose a menu option that costs 85 euros (about $100) per head, that comprises seven dishes, including boletus, pig’s ear, and rice dishes with seasonal fungi. The Michelin guide describes the restaurant, which opened in 2001, as having “innovative cuisine … based around the highest quality, seasonal, local product.”  Restaurant RiFF earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in Tripadvisor reviews. It earned its first Michelin star in 2009. The woman battled diarrhea and vomiting after consuming the dish. She died the following morning Sunday morning, February 17, 2019, after bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. Her funeral took place three days later, on Feb. 20, 2019. Chef Bernd H. Knöller expressed his “deep sorrow” for the death. Food samples from RiFF have been sent to Spain’s National Institute for Forensic Science for testing. “We will have to wait … before we can determine whether it was the ingestion of a food that directly caused her death, or whether it prompted a state that led to this fatal outcome,” said regional health chief Ana Barceló on Wednesday, reported the Telegraph. Ana Barceló is head of Valencia’s Ministry of Health. Ana Barceló declined to comment on speculation in the local media that a mushroom might have caused the outbreak, saying it was “irresponsible to establish the origin” before an autopsy and other tests were completed. She also said that an initial inspection of the restaurant found that “everything appears normal,” according to El País.

UPDATE Feb.28,2019: The 46-year-old woman who died after eating a meal with her family in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Valencia, eastern Spain, choked on her own vomit. That is according to a provisional report on the death from the region’s Institute of Legal Medicine, sources familiar with the investigation have told EL PAÍS. However, the cause of death is not yet definitive, given that investigators are waiting for toxicology reports.

Possible reasons for death:

May be she died from asphyxiation from vomit in her lungs.

May be she died from unprepared Morchella.

May be she died from False Morchella.

May be she died from another toxin.
