Planetariet i Lund genopstår

Forbedret kommunikation i virksomheder

Sun sets on 2010 biodiversity targets
More than 190 countries agreed to reduce biodiversity loss by 2010. A UN report says they failed.

The report, the third edition of the

(GBO-3), found that animal populations have dropped by 30 per cent in 40 years, endangered plant and animal species are moving closer to extinction and natural habitats in most parts of the world continue to decline in size and integrity.
"Twenty-one percent of all known mammals, 30 per cent of all known amphibians, 12 per cent of all known birds and 27 per cent of reef-building corals assessed are threatened with extinction," Bill Jackson, deputy director general of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which maintains the Red List Threatened Species
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/science_and_environment/10103179.stm
told the BBC ]].
GBO-3 found that none of 21 biodiversity targets set in 2002 were met
on a global basis, including targets to curb the rate of habitat loss
and degradation, protect at least 10 per cent of the Earth's ecological
regions, control the spread of invasive species and ensure
international trade does not threaten any species with extinction.
Last month, a study reviewing 31 indicators was published in

2002 targets are not being met. We are even losing human biodiversity,
it said: since 1970,

The

somewhat seriously. It tracked their efforts to keep the 2010 pledge,
and found all indicators of policy and management had improved. For
instance, the number of designated protected areas, national
legislation to limit biodiversity loss have increased. But

After months of frustration, US stem-cell biologists are celebrating today after learning that the most popular line of human embryonic stem (ES) cells has been approved for research using government funds. "This is fantastic news," Charles Murry, a researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, whose work had been placed on hold,
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/27/AR2010042703360.html
told the Washington Post ]].
After President Barack Obama took office, he

ended the restrictions ]]
imposed by his predecessor George Bush, which had limited federal funding to around 20 cell lines isolated before August 2001.
But the new policy came with strict requirements on informed consent from the donors of the embryos from which the cells were taken – and researchers were worried that the consent procedures used for some of the earlier lines
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227053.700-obamas-stem-cell-plans-could-backfire.html
wouldn't make the grade ]]
.
The solution was to set up a panel to consider whether the older lines met the spirit of the new consent lines, given the standards in force at the time. In the meantime, these lines went off-limits for government funding.
Progress has been slow. Of particular concern were two lines made at the University of Wisconsin-Madison by ES-cell pioneer

placed with the National Stem Cell Bank, set up to distribute the Bush-approved lines.
H1 got the green light in late January, but the continuing delay for H9 had caused frustration to boil over.

Interviewed by the Washington Post ]]
in March, Murry said: "The situation at the moment is worse than it was under the Bush administration."
The hiatus ended yesterday, when H9 was approved along with 12 other cell lines.
One problem was that the H9 line was isolated from an embryo donated in Israel. "[I]t took significant time and effort to locate, gather and translate the documents from Hebrew to English, so we could complete the application," Erik Forsberg, executive director of WiCell, which manages the cell line,
http://www.news.wisc.edu/18020
told the University of Wisconsin's news service ]].
Complaints from biologists and patients who want to see medical research accelerated should now die down. But the National Institutes of Health, which is overseeing the approval of new lines, still has much work to do to make good on Obama's promise to widen access to human ES cells.

of the Children's Hospital in Boston. These were approved in December, but later placed on hold when officials realised that they had been created from embryos at an earlier stage than described in the official government definition of an embryonic stem cell.

Animals talk, sing and act like humans?
For decades, the consensus was that as young children begin reasoning about the biological world, they adopt an "anthropocentric" stance, favoring humans over non-human animals when it comes to learning about properties of animals. Northwestern researchers teamed up with researchers and educators from the Menominee Nation in Wisconsin to determine whether this human-centered reasoning is universal. They discovered children's reasoning about the biological world is influenced by cultural beliefs and daily experiences with nature.

Researchers discover metabolic vulnerability in TB and potential drug target
Tuberculosis (TB) has been present in humans since ancient times. The origins of the disease date back to the first domestication of cattle, and skeletal remains show prehistoric humans (4,000 B.C.) had TB. Although relatively rare in the United States, it is the single leading bacterial cause of death worldwide. Approximately 8 million people are infected each year and 2 million people die from TB.

Did phosphorus trigger complex evolution — and blue skies?
The evolution of complex life forms may have gotten a jump start billions of years ago, when geologic events over millions of years caused large quantities of phosphorus to wash into the oceans. According to this model, proposed by Dominic Papineau of the Carnegie Institution for Science, the higher levels of phosphorus would have caused vast algal blooms, pumping extra oxygen into the environment which allowed larger, more complex types of organisms to thrive.
